Formed in 1896, the Canadian Bar Association is a professional, voluntary organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, with branches in each of the provinces and territories. The Association's 160-person staff represents 38,000 lawyers, judges, notaries, law teachers, and law students across Canada.

Challenge

The CBA had an outdated system that no longer met their needs. Many tasks, such as invoicing, still had to be done manually. The legacy system was being used by the national office but the Association needed a centralized solution that could be accessed by all branches across the country. The CBA wanted to take a more holistic approach to managing the membership database and member communication; they needed a robust solution that could grow as their needs evolved.

Solution

Using iMIS to manage their website, the CBA began offering member self-service, online registration, dues renewal, continuing education, and an online store. The Association also used iMIS to consolidate, track and report on member data. Taking advantage of the system efficiencies, the organization was able to eliminate many of their manual processes — to the staff's delight. iMIS was also used to improve their events and make the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs more accessible.

Results

With the help of iMIS, CBA has greatly improved the online experience for members. They now have the convenience and access to information they wanted. Staff is more productive and they appreciate the new interface that simplifies tasks and provides a comprehensive view of the members' engagement with the organization. CBA has also seen an improvement in cash flow as a result of the streamlined processes and the administrative burden on staff has been significantly reduced.
