Canadian Library Association Streamlines Web Content with iMIS

Canadian Library Association (CLA), founded in 1946, represents the interests of academic libraries, public libraries, school libraries, special libraries and library trustees. The organization serves as the leading national voice for the library and information community on public policy, funding, literacy and privacy issues, and provides development grants, scholarships, awards and job resources to its members.

The Challenge:

Supporting an information-loving community, CLA found it difficult to continuously offer enough up-to-date content to its members. The association's inconsistent, static HTML Web site and manual database system hindered CLA from making information easily accessible and providing optimum member support. CLA required a flexible solution to efficiently deliver content, fine-tune its online resources and enhance communication among the association and its members.

The Solution:

CLA selected iMIS to provide core content management functionalities as well as upgrade and drive online community activities, including its library careers page and e-newsletters. An open and scalable solution, iMIS organized information into categories across the association's Web site, integrated CLA's communications and advocacy programs into a single database and increased its capacity for and delivery of current content. With enhanced association management capabilities, CLA also tracked member preferences to better target information and services, and reduced the need for a hard copy paper system, manual data entry processes and other expenses.

The Results:

With iMIS, CLA not only delivered high-quality, library-related information to its members but also updated the professional development resources available on its Web site. The association was able to further develop sub-categories for its content and designate more time to training volunteers to update the Web site. CLA also drew an unprecedented amount of advertisements to its improved library careers portal. The association is continuing to integrate iMIS into its elections process, annual conference evaluation, shopping portal for industry literature and social networking eCommunities component.

"Our members are technologically savvy and very hands-on," said Don Butcher, CLA's executive director. "iMIS gives our members the tools they need to both access the information they require and develop content to share with each other."
